Day 5 : Rwanda Gorilla Trekking –  [Optional visit to the Cultural Village – ]

After an early breakfast, we take a short drive to Park Headquarters and meet with excellent local guides and trackers who will give a talk on the etiquette of gorilla trekking. The trekking can take from 1 to 6 hours and climb to altitudes not in excess of 7,500 feet.  The terrain is rough and at times muddy. Although the hike is physically demanding the beauty of the forest and surrounding scenery make the trekking worthwhile.

Once the gorillas are located, all fatigue is forgotten, as the experience is often described as being the most profound natural history experience in the world. When you meet with the gorillas take the photos and videos. Cameras and plenty of fast speed film are recommended. It is important to take plenty of water.  It can rain at a few minutes’ notice, hence waterproof clothing is a good essential including waterproof bag for cameras and film.

Upon return, we will drive back to the lodge where you can while away the afternoon or opt to go for a visit to the cultural village to see the life of local people around the volcanoes area.

Overnight at Kinigi Guest House. Meal plan: Full Board.

Day 6 :  Golden Monkey Trekking & Twin Lakes.

Wake up early morning as we have to be at the headquarters at exactly 7:00am.

The Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus Mitis Kandti) is a local subspecies of the widespread Sykes Monkey, also known as the “Blue Monkey” and is endemic to the high altitude forests of the Volcanoes National Park area. The monkeys are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or frolicking on the forest floor. There are two habituated groups of Golden Monkey, one group comprises around 80 – 100 members and has its home at the foot of Mt Sabyinyo. You will trek to find the golden monkeys in a similar way to the gorilla trek – in a small group of no more than eight people, and you can spend one hour with the monkeys once you find them. They are very sprightly creatures, and leap from tree to tree which is really entertaining, if a little difficult to photograph! We recommend setting your camera to a fast shutter-speed to allow for low light in the dense undergrowth and to better your chances of capturing the golden monkeys on film! This is a great way to spend an extra day in the Volcanoes National Park! Upon return, we will drive towards the twin lakes, cross the lake and go for lunch on one of the islands. You can choose to have a lake tour/boat cruise before or after lunch.

Overnight at Kinigi Guest House. Meal plan: Full Board.
